A time to celebrate our achievements and to remember the goods and the bads for the past year. What does Singapore mean to us? What achievements to remember by?
49 years of nationhood may seem insignificant, as compared to the 6000 years of written history, but to us, it meant going against the odds, many times.
How is it reasonable that a country, so small and lack of any natural resources, to become one of the top-notch city state today?
We owed it to our forefathers and the tenacious first generation politicians, led Mr Lee Kuan Yew. They are truly the 父母官 in the most literal sense. Very strict but beneath it all, is a genuine concern of whether are the people well-fed, slept well and generally comfortable.
My generation and the upcoming generation probably will never truly understand what is 一无所有. We are blessed and we do have all the things we want. I grew up in the 90s and that period was one of which saw rapid economic growth, social harmony and a general sense of "everything is going great". But recently, it seems that the people are angry.
MRT breakdowns, influx of foreigners, expensive houses, crowds, strikes and riot.
But things are still going great.
Singapore does have issues as with other nations. It is how the people handle them that defines us. So what have we achieved for the past year to celebrate?
